WESTMINSTER : Parade to Mark Flag Day Festivities

Share

Children dressed in costumes from around the world will march in a parade today as part of the celebration of the annual Flag Day at the Civic Center Sunken Gardens on Westminster Boulevard.

The theme of this year’s event is “Many Nations--One Flag.”

Festivities will begin at 11:45 a.m. with the Willis Warner Middle School band playing a medley of patriotic songs. The Musical Variations, a popular local senior group, also will perform.

City officials said the event will help heal the wounds from the recent unsuccessful recall drive against Mayor Charles V. Smith and council members Craig Schweisinger, Charmayne S. Bohman and Tony Lam.

Smith said that the event will help honor the various cultures that have strengthened the city and the country.

Police officers, firefighters and members of local veteran organizations also will participate in the festivities.

The parade will begin at noon at the police station near the Clock Tower, and participants will walk the short distance to the Sunken Gardens behind the Council Chambers.

Residents are encouraged to participate and bring their own flags during the parade.

Meanwhile, the Boy Scouts of America, Orange County Council, is providing free pamphlets on the history, use and care of the U.S. flag.

Copies are available today at the Scout Service Center, 3590 Harbor Gateway North in Costa Mesa, near Harbor and MacArthur boulevards. Those who want copies mailed to them should call (714) 546-4990.
