BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : DODGERS : Park Makes Visit to Dodger Stadium

Chan Ho Park, whose double-A San Antonio club was on its All-Star break, was a visitor at Dodger Stadium Monday night but was due back in San Antonio today.

Earlier in the day, Park and his uncle had lunch with Manager Tom Lasorda.

“We talked about a lot of things,” Lasorda said. “We talked a little about some things that we wanted very clear with him. He’s doing fine.”

Lasorda said that however warmly he feels about Park, the Dodgers never considered bringing Park up during the recent bullpen struggles.

“If we had a starter opening, we’d have him up here,” Lasorda said. “But he hasn’t pitched enough to bring him up here and put him in the bullpen. It would be an injustice to the young man.”

Lasorda bristled when he was asked if the bullpen problems have altered the way he approaches the late innings.

“The only thing that’s going to affect if I take out a pitcher is whether I think that pitcher has lost his stuff,” Lasorda said. “If I see he’s lost it, he’s coming out of the game.

“I’m not afraid to use any of those guys. They’re the ones who got us to where we were--four games out in front. You go through hitting slumps, defensive slumps, starting-pitching slumps, and now we’re in a relief-pitching slump. We’ll get through it.”

Dodger Executive Vice President Fred Claire said relief pitcher Jim Gott, who underwent an emergency appendectomy last Thursday, was expected to be released from the hospital today and should take about three to four weeks to return to action.
