LOS ANGELES : City Officials Make New Offer to Police Union

Share

A day after the city of Los Angeles declared an impasse in its contract talks with the police union, Mayor Richard Riordan and a small group of city officials met privately with top union leaders and made an offer in an attempt to reach a deal.

Although details of Wednesday’s proposal were not disclosed, sources said the contract package was significantly higher than the one officers overwhelmingly rejected last month.

The latest proposal advanced by the city did not emerge from the council’s negotiating team. Instead, it was put forward by Riordan, Council President John Ferraro, City Administrative Officer Keith Comrie and two of the council’s prime police supporters--Councilmen Richard Alatorre and Hal Bernson.

Police Protective League leaders left the meeting at the Biltmore Hotel without comment. But sources said the union took the proposal seriously and was waiting for the city to gather enough support for the package on the City Council.
