Plan to Reintroduce Wolves to Idaho and Yellowstone Is OKd
Interior Secretary Bruce Babbitt has given final approval to a plan to reintroduce the endangered gray wolf to Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming and to central Idaho for the first time in 70 years.
Under the program, which was backed by environmentalists but opposed by ranchers fearful for their livestock, about 30 wolves initially will be collared and monitored in Canada.
Following the drafting of final rules, the animals would gradually be reintroduced to Yellowstone and Idaho beginning this fall. The aim is to have at least 100 wolves at each location by the year 2002.
