PIRU : Oxnard Man Arrested in Cockfight Raid

Share

An Oxnard man was arrested Sunday after Ventura County sheriff’s deputies broke up a crowd of 60 spectators at a cockfight in Piru, a sheriff’s spokeswoman said.

Most of the spectators and organizers fled when deputies arrived, but deputies apprehended Geraldo Gonzales, 28, of Oxnard on suspicion of violating a county animal cruelty code that outlaws cockfighting, the spokeswoman said.

In their sweep of the area, deputies found 10 dead roosters that had been thrown into the bushes and about 25 live animals that were later turned over to the Ventura County Animal Regulation Department.

Along with the animals, deputies confiscated several boxes of so-called fighting spurs, blades that are tied to the roosters’ legs before they are put in the ring to fight, the spokeswoman said.

Because the alleged offense is a misdemeanor, Gonzales was cited and released, she said.
