Quakes Rattle San Fernando Valley, Eureka Area, Alaska
Moderate earthquakes were felt Sunday in several Northern California communities and Kodiak, Alaska, while three small aftershocks of the Jan. 17 Northridge earthquake rattled the San Fernando Valley.
No damage was reported.
The Northern California quake struck at 3:39 a.m. and measured magnitude 4.9, said Mike Antolik of the University of California seismographic station in Berkeley. It was centered about 36 miles southwest of Eureka.
“It felt stronger than a large truck going by on a freeway,” said Frank Mancinelli, an announcer at radio station KINS in Eureka.
The Alaska quake had a preliminary magnitude of 4.3 and was centered about 15 miles northeast of Kodiak.
In Southern California, the aftershocks Sunday morning were no stronger than magnitude 2.8.
