TORRANCE : High Schools to Be Shut During Lunch
Concern about student safety and complaints about high school students’ behavior off campus led the school board to close high school campuses during lunch.
At a board meeting Monday, the Torrance Unified School District voted unanimously to keep all students at school during lunch, beginning in the fall.
District officials said neighbors complained about students littering and creating disturbances.
Students will be allowed to leave school grounds only if they have written permission from their parents on a particular day. Currently, students may request a pass that allows them to leave every day. School officials estimate that 70% of the students enrolled this year have permission to leave campus for lunch.
To ease the transition, the district has added vending carts that serve fast food at the high schools. The district also recently added fencing around Torrance and South High Schools.
