Arcangues and Jerry Bailey will be reunited again in the $750,000 Hollywood Gold Cup on July 2.

The rider when Arcangues scored his $269.20 upset in the Breeders’ Cup Classic last Nov. 6, Bailey replaces Eddie Delahoussaye.

Delahoussaye has ridden the 6-year-old for trainer Richard Mandella in both of Arcangues’ 1994 starts--a victory in the John Henry Handicap on May 1 and a fifth-place finish in the Hollywood Turf Handicap on May 30. In the Turf Handicap, Arcangues ran contrary to his style as he either set or forced the pace, then had little to offer in the final quarter of a mile.

“(Bailey) rated him nicely in the Classic,” said Mandella, who wasn’t happy after Arcangues’ last race. “And we wanted to try him back again.”

Arcangues made his dirt debut in the Breeders’ Cup Classic and will be returning to that surface in the Gold Cup. He worked six furlongs in 1:10 4/5 over Hollywood Park’s main track on Sunday.

Bothered by sinusitis for several months and able to ride only off and on, Delahoussaye gave up the mount on Strodes Creek in the Belmont Stakes on June 11 and Bailey wound up riding him to a third-place finish behind Tabasco Cat and Go For Gin. Mandella said, however, that Delahoussaye’s physical condition was not a factor in the decision to switch riders.

The 7-year-old roan, who was 14-1 when he beat Bien Bien and six others in the Turf Handicap, worked half a mile in 47 4/5 on Tuesday. “He’s nominated to the American Handicap (July 4) and we’ll look at the Sunset (July 24),” trainer Jenine Sahadi said. . . . Saturday’s Jim Murray Stakes at Hollywood Park will be the final race in this week’s National Best Seven. The other races: the Hill Prince from Belmont Park, the Princess Rooney from Calder in Florida, the Blue Sparkler from Monmouth Park in New Jersey, the Very Subtle from Laurel in Maryland, the Chicago Budweiser Breeders’ Cup from Arlington Park and the Mangaki from Golden Gate Fields. . . .
