GOINGS ON : Film Series Opening at UC Santa Barbara : As summer offerings are announced, the Arts & Lectures staff is lining up varied music, dance and dramatic performances for fall.

School may be out, but UC Santa Barbara’s Arts & Lectures department seems to be keeping busy, with the kick-off to a film series at Campbell Hall.

Topping the schedule are two highly acclaimed releases from last year. “In the Name of the Father” stars Daniel Day-Lewis and Emma Thompson, and will be shown tonight, and the Vietnamese movie “The Scent of Green Papaya” will be shown Sunday. Both movies will begin at 7 p.m. General admission is $5. Call 893-3535 for information.

Meanwhile, the Arts & Lectures staff is preparing for the fall’s performance schedule. A sampling of the 1993-94 lineup: the National Theater of the Deaf, the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, the Gyuto Monks Tibetan Tantric Choir, Mariachi Los Camperos de Nati Cano, the Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles, the Brave Old World klezmer band and the Margaret Jenkins Dance Company.

Local bluegrass favorites the Cache Valley Drifters will take the stage Friday night in the next installment of the “Presidio Unplugged” series at the Santa Barbara Presidio Chapel. Show time is 8 p.m. Admission is $6 (advance), $7 (at the door). Call 965-0093. The Presidio is at 129 E. Canon Perdido St.

The Santa Barbara Historical Arms Assn. Inc. is holding its 34th annual Summer Arms and Blades Show on Saturday and Sunday at the Earl Warren Showgrounds. In the past, exhibited items have dated back to the 1600s. Displays have included British Sea Service pistols, Civil War and Revolutionary War items, and weapons used at the Alamo.

Hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $5 (adults), $3 (children 12 and younger) and $1 (those 62 and older). Call 687-0766 for information.

Local composer Vernon Martin will pay tribute to the life and work of Andrea Lang at SOhO on Monday, the fourth anniversary of the artist’s death in the Santa Barbara Painted Cave fire.

Martin and his Universal Unity Rhythm, Sound and Motion group will perform the multimedia piece, “For Andrea Lang: Music From the Painted Cave.” They will be joined by the Ana Galindo Flamenco Troupe.

The concert will begin at 8 p.m., with a 10 p.m. show to be added if demand for tickets warrants it. Admission, on a sliding scale, is $10 to $20. SOhO is at 1221 State St., Suite 205 (on the second level of Victoria Court). For information, call the Contemporary Arts Forum at 966-5373. Lang’s work is on exhibit at CAF through Aug. 6.

World-renowned opera stars Thomas Hampson and Frederica von Stade will perform with the Santa Barbara Symphony Orchestra on Tuesday at Santa Barbara’s Arlington Theatre.

Hampson and von Stade have performed with New York’s Metropolitan Opera, and have played classic opera roles in premier opera houses throughout Europe. This will be their first time on stage together.

The evening’s program will include arias from Mozart’s “Don Giovanni” and “The Marriage of Figaro,” Rossini’s “Barber of Seville,” Verdi’s “Don Carlo” and Bizet’s “Carmen.” Hampson and von Stade will also perform a selection of Broadway tunes from “Carousel” and “Showboat.” The performance will begin at 8 p.m. Tickets are $35, $30 and $25.
