A teen-ager shot and killed his pregnant, 14-year-old girlfriend Friday night and moments later shot himself to death, police said.

The shootings occurred just before 7:45 p.m. in the 3300 block of South Park Drive.

Rosa Vargas and the 16-year-old boy had been dating since the beginning of the year, and she was three months’ pregnant with his child, her sister Betty Vargas, 18, said Friday night.

Because of his temper, Rosa Vargas heeded her mother’s advice and broke up with the boy a week ago, Betty Vargas said.

On Friday night, the boy and a friend arrived on their bicycles at Rosa’s house to return some of her belongings and to get his belongings from her, the sister said.

“He was drunk,” said Rosa’s brother Frank, 20. “He was always drunk.”

As they all stood on the front yard, he asked Rosa if the baby was his, Betty Vargas said. Her mother responded that he need not worry about it. At that point, Vargas said, he pulled a gun and shot at the mother, putting a bullet in the wall.

She ran inside, and he began shooting at Rosa, hitting her in the arm and neck, Vargas said. She staggered to the door and collapsed and died just outside of it.

He then ran down the street, stopping a few houses away and shooting himself to death.

Police have not released the boy’s name.

“She was looking forward to having her baby,” Vargas said. “Rosa was a sweet girl with long hair down to her back. I can’t believe he killed my sister.”

Rosa was a freshman at Saddleback High School. The shooter went to Horizon High School, Vargas said.
