WORLD CUP USA ’94 / THE FIRST ROUND : SPOTLIGHT : COME, WATCH, LEAVE

Orlando seems to be taking World Cup security a bit more seriously than some of the other venues. One plane filled with Mexican fans was boarded on arrival Thursday night by a dozen or more Orlando police and several fans suspected of trying to illegally enter the country were detained.

Then, at Friday’s game between Ireland and Mexico, Orlando police officers ringed the Citrus Bowl field, one standing about every 10 yards and all facing the crowd with stern looks.

Serious business, this European football.
