CENTRAL : GARDEN GROVE : Man Shot During Scuffle in Park
A 23-year-old suspected gang member was in critical condition Sunday after being shot four times by a member of his own gang, police said.
Juan De La Torre of Garden Grove, who was wounded in the wrist, leg and abdomen, was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange after the 5 p.m. shooting at Woodbury Park.
De La Torre and another man were in the park when they began to argue, Sgt. Mark Byrne said. The disagreement escalated into a fistfight and then one of the men brandished a gun.
“There was a struggle for the gun,” Byrne said.
Police detained a suspect but released him after De La Torre refused to identify the man as his attacker or cooperate in the investigation.
Byrne said investigators believe both men are members of the same Garden Grove gang.
