LA PUENTE : Gunman Slain by Deputies After Killing 1, Wounding 3

Share

A gunman opened fire Monday night on a carload of people in La Puente, killing one person and wounding three others before Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies tracked him to a nearby neighborhood and shot him to death, authorities said.

Sheriff’s Deputy Rich Erickson said the incident began about 7:30 p.m. when deputies noticed a Honda driving erratically in the 13700 block of Amar Road, about a block from Bassett High School.

When the car jumped a curb and stopped, deputies were confronted by three bleeding occupants, one of whom was dead at the scene, Erickson said. As paramedics transported the car’s two other wounded occupants to hospitals, he said, several women rushed out of a coin laundry, reporting that they, too, had been in the vehicle when the shooting occurred. One of the women was also wounded, Erickson said, and told deputies that the gunman fled the scene on foot.

Meanwhile, he said, a homeowner in the 13900 block of Ragus Street called 911 to report that an armed man was trying to break down her door. Deputies responded to the scene and, in the confrontation that ensued, shot and killed the suspect, Erickson said.

Names of the wounded and dead were not immediately released.
