The governing board of the Santa Ana Unified School District has chosen Educational Search Services to recruit a superintendent to replace Rudy M. Castruita, who will leave the district near the end of July.

The board voted 4 to 1 last week to award the $14,500 contract to the group. Trustees Robert W. Balen, Audrey Yamagata-Noji, Rosemarie Avila and Sal Mendoza supported the move. Trustee Tom Chaffee opposed it, board secretary Georgia Adams said.

Educational Search Services, which is run by the California School Boards Assn., has helped more than 100 school districts recruit new superintendents over the past few years, said Don Champlin, assistant superintendent for personnel services for the district.

The group and its chief consultant Richard Montgomery will be responsible for developing criteria to screen candidates, advertising for the job, performing reference checks and helping negotiate a contract with the winning candidate.

The superintendent oversees about 3,600 full-time and 500 part-time employees. The job pays $124,000 a year, he said.

The search may take take about four months to complete, Champlin said.
