The World Cup nearly experienced its first serious confrontation between fans Tuesday when several dozen Italian fans tried to parade down 22nd Street in front of RFK Stadium in Washington before the game between Italy and Mexico.

Hundreds of Mexican fans had already staked out a spot on 22nd Street and refused to move. The two groups stared at each other, but after a few assorted shoves, the Italians retreated.
