A 16-year-old youth has been arrested in connection with the slaying of a 28-year-old man who was stabbed and shot during a confrontation Sunday afternoon, police said.

The teen-ager, whose name was not released because he is a minor, is suspected of plunging a knife into the chest of Heriberto Carachire of Santa Ana in the 400 block of Orange Avenue. A second teen-ager, suspected of shooting the victim in the leg, remains at large, Lt. Robert Helton said.

“When we first reported this, we thought the victim had been killed by a gunshot,” Helton said. “But an autopsy revealed that (an apparent) gunshot wound to the chest turned out to be a knife wound instead.”

Carachire, who was in his car at the time of the 3 p.m. attack, managed to drive to his home nearby, where paramedics were called. Helton said the victim was a known gang member and that the confrontation was with rival gang members.

The teen-ager, a resident of Santa Ana, was arrested Wednesday night as while walking in the 500 block of East Walnut Street. Helton said the suspect was in possession of a knife that authorities believe is the murder weapon.

“Some breaks have gone our way in this case and we’ve had witnesses come forward with good information,” Helton said.

The suspect is being held at Juvenile Hall on suspicion of murder.
