Extending Life of Dump to Be Studied
The Los Angeles Board of Public Works on Thursday instructed sanitation officials to take the first steps in drafting an environmental study on a proposal to extend the life of the Lopez Canyon Landfill near Lake View Terrace.
But to leave open the option of closing the landfill when its permit expires in 1996, the panel also instructed sanitation officials to begin seeking bids for alternative trash disposal services.
The action is the latest development in a heated debate over whether to extend the dump’s operating permit until 2000.
A city Bureau of Sanitation report released in March suggested that if the city extends the life of the landfill, it can save $72 million over the cost of hauling the city’s waste to other local dumps.
But some Lake View Terrace residents and Councilman Richard Alarcon, whose district includes the landfill, adamantly opposed the extension, saying residents had been promised there would be no extensions.
