Salomon Torres, the San Francisco Giants’ struggling rookie right-hander, was optioned to triple-A Phoenix to make room for Mark Portugal, who was activated from the disabled list.

The 22-year-old Torres (2-8) had lost six consecutive starts and had lasted only 3 1/3 innings in his last start, giving up six runs and walking five. Frustrated by his performances, Torres left the Giants on June 19 without permission.
