Canadian Olympian Dominates Diving

Paige Gordon, who represented Canada in the 1992 Olympics, finished in first place in the senior women’s three-meter competition Sunday at the Southern California Diving Invitational at Marguerite Swimming and Diving Complex.

Gordon, 21, representing the Vancouver Aquatic Centre, finished the day strong, scoring 444.25 points. But Mission Viejo Nadadores’ Sandy Zubrin also was impressive, finishing second with 435.75 points.

The Nadadores’ Summer Brown, who was first in the competition Friday and Saturday, was third with 426.35.

Zubrin, who recently was third in platform diving at the Four Nations Meet in Tianjin, China, and 11th in the China Open, expects stiff competition from Gordon and Eileen Richetelli, who won the women’s competition at the 1991 Pan American Games.

Erica Sorgi, 12, who won the one- and three-meter competition in the 11- to 12-year-old division Friday and Saturday, finished eighth in the senior competition with 401.20 points. Sorgi, representing the Nadadores, was sixth in platform diving in the 11- to 12-year-old division.

In the men’s senior one-meter, Karl Fix of the Vancouver Aquatic Centre was first with 513.50 points. Drew Jackson of Tualatin Hills Dive Club was second with 456 points and Craig Lincoln was third with 449.60.

Tyce Routson, who took first in the three-meter Saturday, did not compete Sunday, but will participate in today’s senior platform event.
