Thomas J. Cunningham; Former Judge, Counsel for UC Regents

Thomas J. Cunningham, 88, former Los Angeles Superior Court judge and general counsel of the UC Board of Regents. A native of Los Angeles, Cunningham graduated with honors from UCLA, where he was student body president and years later president of the Alumni Assn. In 1961 Cunningham was named UCLA alumnus of the year. He earned his law degree from USC, served two terms as 56th District assemblyman, and was an Army infantry colonel during World War II. After a few years in private law practice, he was named a judge by Gov. Earl Warren. As general counsel to the UC regents from 1955 until his retirement in 1973, Cunningham was instrumental in the addition of several new campuses and the development of university law. In 1965, he served as president of the National Assn. of College and University Attorneys. On Sunday in Orange, Calif.
