SAN GABRIEL VALLEY COVER STORY : Making the Vines Grow

Share

Valerie Brannon, 39, thought painting vines would be a one-time effort. Now, despite having no artistic training, she’s painting murals in addition to vines, and she hopes to form a nonprofit corporation to paint murals full time.

Irma Sandoval, 47, a Guatemalan immigrant, has won recognition for volunteer work in schools and for her vine painting. She also would like to create a nonprofit corporation to have immigrant children paint vines and do other craft projects.

Jo Ann Sanchez, left, 55, tried planting vines to beautify walls in 1978. When that didn’t work, she switched to painting vines. Loretta Chase, 50, revived the vine-painting idea three years ago and estimates she has painted 10 miles of the vines since then.
