HUNTINGTON BEACH : Oil-Spill Accident Plaintiffs Are Sought

Share

Local residents who suffered economic damage resulting from the 1990 Huntington Beach oil spill are being asked to join a class-action suit filed against the owners of the oil and the vessel that carried it, as well as various other companies involved in the accident.

“It is our belief that there are in excess of 1,000 people who were economically damaged by the spill,” said Gretchen Nelson, one of the attorneys who filed the suit four years ago.

The Los Angeles federal court certified the action in May, Nelson said, and notices were recently published in local newspapers seeking individuals who were damaged by the Feb. 7, 1990, spill.

Those most likely to have been affected, Nelson said, include commercial and sportfishing boat owners, tour boat operators and owners of certain other types of businesses in Newport Beach and Huntington Beach.

Defendants named in the suit include American Trading Transportation Co. Inc., owner of the tanker from which the oil leaked; BP America Inc.; and BP Oil Supply Co.
