BODY SLING: The new Ejection Seat was the big draw when the Orange County Fair opened Friday (B1). And that’s at $40 a pop too. . . . “It’s a human sling-shot,” says one fair-goer who rode it. Its two 125-foot cords pull back and sling strapped-in riders 30 feet above the catapult, which towers over the rest of the fairgrounds. The $40 may seem steep, but you and a friend can ride together for $30 each.

MOVING IN: The new $8-million Central Library in Newport Beach doesn’t open until Sunday, but its parking lot was full on Friday as staff and construction crews busied themselves with last-minute details. . . . “It has been a controlled frenzy,” says Tom Johnson, assistant city librarian. There’s all new furniture and a whole host of children’s programs they’re boasting about. But much of the library will be the old books crated over from the old building. The doors open Sunday at 1 p.m.

HARVEST TIME: Greg Laurie has never hit a home run, but the California Angels would give anything if they could fill Anaheim Stadium the way he can. The Riverside pastor’s free, three-night, nondenominational Harvest Crusade (B1) drew 152,000 to the Big A last year. For this year’s crusade, which started Friday night and runs tonight and Sunday, Laurie’s got more than 500 area churches promoting the show for him. Tonight’s star entertainment: pop star Deniece Williams.

ONE-THIRD ENOUGH? The private group Enough is Enough has scored another victory against sex magazines. After its pitch, the Buena Park City Council this week tentatively approved an ordinance requiring stores to cover up the bottom two-thirds of such magazines with devices commonly known as “blinder racks.” Enough is Enough got a similar ordinance passed in Costa Mesa. Says the group’s Wendy Leece: “We can’t prohibit them because of the First Amendment, but we can cover the bottom two-thirds of them.”
