A California company is recalling thousands of packages of goat milk cheese because they may contain life-threatening bacteria.

Anyone who purchased Cypress Grove Chevre between early May and June 22 is asked not to eat it, but to return it to the store where it was purchased for a refund.

The cheese was sold primarily in California, but possibly contaminated shipments also went to Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Massachusetts, Michigan, New York, Oregon and Texas.

The Food and Drug Administration discovered some of the cheese wasn’t pasteurized long enough, so it could be contaminated with listeria. That bacteria usually causes flu symptoms in healthy people, but can be deadly to the very young, elderly, people with weak immune systems and fetuses.

There have been no reported illnesses associated with the cheese.
