AGOURA HILLS : Exemptions Offered for New Utility Tax

Share

Elderly and low-income Agoura Hills residents may apply for exemptions from the city’s newly adopted utility tax beginning this week.

The tax, approved last month by the City Council, places a 4% tax on the use of electricity, gas and telephone service.

“The purpose of the exemption, is to assist people who may have difficulty paying the tax,” City Manager Terry Matz said.

Eligible for the exemption are Agoura Hills heads of household who are at least 62 years old and receive supplemental security income, and households with income ranging from $17,650 for one person to $33,250 total for eight people.

According to 1990 census figures, 451 households in Agoura Hills have an income of less than $35,000.

Residents who feel they may be eligible should contact Agoura Hills City Hall between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m., Monday through Thursday.
