60 YEARS: He’s interviewed every president from Hoover to Bush and, no, it’s not Mike Wallace. It’s George Putnam, who, since 1976, has been host of a talk show weekdays on KIEV in Glendale. Thursday, Putnam celebrated two milestones--his 80th birthday and his 60th year in broadcasting. . . . His favorite interview? “Eleanor Roosevelt,” Putnam said. “She had a lot of warmth for her fellow man.”

MORE MOVIES: Woodland Hills could become the next Westwood. After all, a new 20-screen Pacific Theatres complex at Victory and Topanga is set to open in late 1995, and now comes word that Saks Fifth Avenue at the Promenade Mall has been sold to AMC Theaters. . . . The AMC purchase isn’t great news for Pacific. “No business wants competition,” said Dan Chernow, of Pacific Theatres.

NOT WELCOME: The graffiti scrawled across the famed Malibu wall said it all: “Vals Go Home.” In the early days of surfing in the ‘60s, Westsider locals treated Valley beach-goers as trespassers. “The flattening of tires, the breaking of car windows--it could get vicious,” said Mark Richards (above), who grew up in North Hollywood. . . . But Valley surfers didn’t run away. See Valley Life! Page 10.

ON CUE: There’s a new Hollywood Athletic Club, but unlike the more established one, you can actually get a table at the branch at CityWalk in Universal City without a long wait. And the atmosphere is different too. . . . “Over in Hollywood, it’s the movie actor scene,” said April Dion, a waitress. “Here, we get a lot of the Burbank studio people.” See Valley Life! Page 35.

END OF AN ERA: Jack Sherwin certainly milked his career for everything he could. But today, after 32 years of delivering dairy products to Valley residents, Sherwin is retiring (B1). . . . He’s seen many changes in the milk business, and the household. “You don’t see much of those pretty women in negligees answering the door,” he said.
