If Italy beats Brazil on Sunday, it will be the first time a European team has won a World Cup outside its own continent.

But even if the Brazilians win, their spectacular striker, Romario, says they will owe a debt of gratitude to Europe because so many of them play there professionally.

“Determination and fighting spirit, that is something we have learned from the European game,” says Romario, who played five seasons for PSV Eindhoven in the Netherlands before moving to FC Barcelona in Spain.

“But we’re never going to forget that our technique will always be Brazilian.”
