Five Local Players Win in USTA Event
Five players from Orange County won their opening matches in the U.S. Tennis Assn. men’s national 50 and 55 hardcourt championships Monday at the Lindborg Club.
In the men’s 50 division: Philippe DeGaillande of Costa Mesa beat Bill Vannum of McLean, Va., 6-4, 7-6, 6-4; Michael Fazio of Huntington Beach defeated Richard Mortensen of Long Beach, 6-1, 6-1; Robert Kisner of Huntington Beach beat Jim Farrell of Los Angeles, 3-6, 6-2, 7-6; Richard DeBeau of Mission Viejo beat Roger Immer of Cypress, 6-0, 6-2, and Ron Hextell of Newport Beach defeated Bob Hensler of Tucson, Ariz., 6-0, 6-1.
Ed Sukla of Irvine, Jim Palmer of Brea and Leon Richmond of Orange were eliminated in the first round.
The tournament continues today, starting at 9 a.m.
