An 11-year-old boy was in critical but stable condition Wednesday after the car he was riding in was struck by a motorist who allegedly ran a red light, authorities said.

Peter Anthony Rua, of Whittier, was being treated for head injuries and broken legs at UCI Medical Center in Orange, hospital officials said.

Police said Rua was a passenger in an auto that was struck when the driver of a Jeep ran a red light at Beach Boulevard and Warner Avenue about 10 p.m. Tuesday, police said.

The drivers of the two vehicles suffered only minor injuries, Lt. Luis Ochoa said.

Police said the driver of the Cherokee, William Hardy, 37, of Newport Beach, was under investigation Wednesday.

Police alleged that Hardy ran a red light as he turned his Jeep onto Warner Avenue and collided with the oncoming auto, driven by Rafael Quintana, 29, of La Habra. A car behind Quintana’s also was struck, and the driver, 21-year-old Mark Seafort, was slightly injured, Ochoa said.
