Seventeen people have been displaced by a fire that raged through one of the buildings in their condominium complex Saturday night, seriously damaging seven units.

The fire was in the roof area, said Rudy Weyland, a spokesman for the Anaheim Fire Department.

The damage caused by the 10:34 p.m. blaze at Brookhurst Village, 1250 S. Brookhurst St. in Anaheim “will require major reconstruction,” Weyland said Sunday.

According to Weyland, the three-alarm fire took 49 firefighters from Anaheim, Garden Grove and the county fire department about 25 minutes to contain.

Fire investigators have not yet determined the cause of the blaze nor the dollar amount of damage it caused, Weyland said. But of the seven damaged units, he said, three on the ground floor and one on an upper floor received water damage while three more on the upper floor received heavy damage to their roofs caused by the fire.

Weyland said representatives of the Red Cross quickly arrived at the scene to assist displaced residents in finding food and shelter. “They have put them up in motels and hotels” until the damage can be assessed and repaired, he said.

The only person reported injured, Weyland said, was a security guard who suffered minor smoke inhalation. The guard was not hospitalized.
