Spencer Moves Fast to Beat Elliott

Jimmy Spencer outraced and outmaneuvered teammate Bill Elliott to win the DieHard 500 at Talladega Superspeedway in Alabama.

Spencer, with Elliott close behind, took the lead with 19 laps remaining in the 188-lap race, then held off Elliott, winless since November of 1992.

“I’ve got me one heck of a race car,” Spencer said. “Awesome, man. Never in my life have I had a race car handle like this. I had my foot in it all day long.”

In the last five laps, Elliott, the 1988 Winston Cup champion, tried to go outside Spencer. Then he tried to go inside his teammate’s car. He even tried to feint to one side and drive to the other.

Said Elliott: “I didn’t know what else to do. He had a faster car, that’s all there is to it.”

American Kevin Schwantz, overcoming a crash during qualifying 24 hours earlier, won his fourth British 500cc Motorcycle Grand Prix, in Donington, England.

Schwantz survived a spectacular 140-m.p.h. crash in which he was thrown from his bike. There were fears he might have re-injured his broken left wrist and would pull out of Sunday’s race. Instead, he drove with the wrist in a cast.

Pole-sitter Johnny O’Connell of Chandler, Ariz., won the IMSA Exxon Supreme GT Series race at Laguna Seca Raceway in Monterey in his Nissan 300ZX.

O’Connell’s teammate, Steve Millen of Newport Beach, grabbed the lead from O’Connell on the first lap, but O’Connell regained it on lap 13, eventually pulling away for an 18-second advantage.

O’Connell, the defending Laguna Seca GTS race winner, scored his second victory of the IMSA Exxon Supreme GTS season on his 32nd birthday.

Scott Kalitta, John Force and Darrell Alderman continued their drag-racing dominance, winning the $1.2-million NHRA Mopar Parts Mile-High Nationals in Morrison, Colo. All three set track records during qualifying and led their respective fields Sunday in the rain-delayed finals.

Pro Football

Running back Marshall Faulk agreed to contract terms with the Indianapolis Colts, the team said.

Faulk, from San Diego State, was the Colts’ top draft pick and the second overall pick in this year’s NFL draft.

No terms of the contract were released.

Karch Kiraly and Kent Steffes won the $100,000 Assn. of Volleyball Professionals Miller Lite Open in Chicago by defeating Mike Dodd and Mike Whitmarsh, 15-11, in the final. Cammy Ciarelli and Holly McPeak won the women’s final, 13-12, over Nancy Reno and Angela Rock. . . . Monique Oliver and Gayle Stammer defeated Gail Castro and Elaine Roque, 15-7, to win the Women’s Professional Volleyball Assn. Pismo Beach Open.

Dash Its Couper, making only her second career start, denied Meltdown a shot at the quarter horse triple crown by winning the $538,441 Rainbow Futurity by a neck at Ruidoso Downs, N.M.

The U.S. team won the men’s and women’s 1,600-meter relays on the final day of the IAAF World Junior Athletics Championships in Lisbon, Portugal.

Brigham Young is a heavy favorite to win its sixth consecutive Western Athletic Conference football title, according to a poll.
