LOS ALAMITOS : City to Let Manager OK Small Contracts

Share

The city manager now may sign contracts worth less than $10,000 on behalf of the city without first seeking approval from the City Council.

Council members on Monday unanimously approved the new procedure to make it easier to contract for routine professional and consulting services.

“It saves us some money,” City Manager Robert C. Dunek said. “It frees staff time from preparing reports and getting the council to review and approve them.”

Dunek said that under the old practice, all contracts, regardless of amount, go to the council for review and approval. Then they are sent out to bid and advertised in a local newspaper.

The process takes time and often is not necessary, considering that the contract could be just a couple of thousand dollars, he said.

Dunek said the practice of soliciting prices from different sources will be continued even for small purchases.
