The U.S. basketball team gained a bit of consolation and revenge Thursday by beating Russia, 80-71, to take the bronze medal at the Goodwill Games.

Michael Finley of Wisconsin led the Americans with 24 points, Alan Henderson of Indiana added 17 and Shawn Respert of Michigan State had 11. Sergei Babkov led Russia with 15 points.

Puerto Rico beat Italy, 94-80, for the gold, avenging a defeat to the Italians in the preliminary round.

“This was the best game in five we played here,” said U.S. Coach George Raveling. “It made a difference the game was against the Russians. If we’d have played anybody else but Russia I’m not convinced our incentive would have been as high.”

BOXING

In semifinals, U.S. champion Carlos Navarro of Los Angeles won in the 112-pound division and Shane Swartz of Ft. Collins, Colo., beat Stephen Beets of Ocean Springs, Miss., 18-10 in the 165-pound class.

Benjamin McDowell of Ft. Bragg, N.C., (178-pound) and Lance Whitaker of Northridge (over 200 pounds) also won.
