SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO : Councilman Won’t Seek Reelection

City Councilman Jeff Vasquez said Friday that he will not be running for a second term.

The 37-year-old Vasquez, who owns a photography and video business, said he felt it was time to let someone else seek a seat on the council.

“I think one of the things I was able to bring to the council was a fresh perspective and the vigor to make changes to the city,” Vasquez said.

“One of the things wrong with government is that some people stay in it too long.”

Vasquez said he was proud to help make City Hall more responsive to residents and make decisions from the voters’ perspective.

Vasquez becomes the second incumbent not to seek reelection.

Last week, Councilman Gary L. Hausdorfer said he would not be running again.

Three seats are up for election in November. Only incumbent Gil Jones has filed nomination papers.

Six people have obtained nomination papers as of Friday, according to City Clerk Cheryl Johnson.

If an incumbent doesn’t file by the Aug. 12 deadline, the filing period is extended to Aug. 17, Johnson said.
