Share

Police shot to death an unarmed man after he came toward them with his hand concealed in his waistband, authorities said.

Officers spotted the 22-year-old man Sunday at a street corner where gang members with guns were reported to be congregating, police Capt. B. Hagerty said. The man, whose name was not immediately released, fled in a car with police in pursuit, crashing a short time later.

When the man got out of his car and ran, two officers followed him to a grassy area in front of the Maritime Museum in San Pedro. The man stopped in the middle of the lawn, then began to walk toward an officer in a “threatening manner” with his hand in his waistband, Hagerty said.

When the man ignored several commands to show his hand, an officer shot him once in the torso, killing him, Hagerty said. No weapon was found on the man’s body.
