WOMEN’S TENNIS : Breakthrough for Medvedeva
Natalia Medvedeva of the Ukraine scored her first victory in nearly three months, defeating Nathalie Herreman of France, 6-0, 6-2, on Monday in the first round of the Toshiba Tennis Classic at the La Costa Resort and Spa.
No. 33 Medvedeva had lost in the first round of her last four tournaments, including early exits at the French Open and Wimbledon. The last time Medvedeva won a match was in the Prague Open in May.
In other matches involving seeded players, Canada’s Jana Nejedly upset No. 13 Marketa Kochta of Germany, 6-3, 5-7, 6-3, and No. 12 Ann Grossman of Grove City, Ohio, defeated Carrie Cunningham of Livonia, Mich., 6-3, 6-1. Lisa Raymond of Wayne, Pa., defeated Australia’s Rennae Stubbs, 7-5, 7-6 (7-3).
Top-ranked Steffi Graf begins play today when she faces Alexia Dechaume-Balleret of France.
