St. Mary’s Foundation Names Chair

Bernie Jones, owner of Equity Brokers Inc. of Long Beach, has been named chairman of St. Mary Medical Center Foundation. Jones has also been president of many Long Beach-area community organizations and is a founding member of the American Cancer Society’s Huntington Harbour Cancer League.

Compton school administrator Van M. Christopher has been appointed to the state Child Development Program Advisory Committee by Gov. Pete Wilson.

Tyisha Jones, a student at Lindbergh Middle School in Long Beach, won first prize in a nationwide poetry contest called Higher Order Thinking Skills. Tyisha won $50 and a trip to the Tucson Poetry Festival to read her poem, “Madam and the Hair System.”

Leticia Espinoza, staff assistant at Long Beach Poly High School, won the Parent of the Year Award from the California Assn. of Bilingual Education. Espinoza, who serves on the superintendent’s Hispanic Advisory Committee, is the mother of Poly student Reynaldo Espinoza.

Long Beach resident Rod Givens has been appointed to the Los Angeles County Affirmative Action Policy Panel, which works to ensure county compliance with state and federal affirmative action policies. Givens, owner of Givens Realty, also works with the accounting firm Morrison-Givens and Co.

The Community Family Guidance Center, a nonprofit mental health agency serving various Southeast cities, recently named Catherine Grant president of the board. Grant, an attorney, heads Community Legal Services in Norwalk, a legal aid agency serving low-income residents of eight Southeast cities.
