A 33-year-old Oxnard man has been arrested after holding police at bay for five hours, threatening to kill his four children and shattering the windows of his house, authorities said.

Eugene Everett Luna was taken into custody about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday after a police SWAT team forced its way into the house and found Luna asleep in his living room.

Luna was booked into Ventura County Jail on suspicion of vandalism and willful cruelty to a child. He was being held in lieu of $5,000 bail, according to the jail watch commander.

Oxnard police said the incident began with a fight between Luna and his mother at the family’s home in the 500 block of East Yucca Street. When officers arrived about 6:35 p.m., Luna had barricaded himself inside and was threatening to kill his children, ages 2 to 10, authorities said.

As police tried to negotiate with Luna, three of his children escaped. Angry that police would not send the children back into the house, Luna began destroying the interior of the house and smashing out glass windows, according to Sgt. Dan Christian.

The SWAT team rescued the fourth child while entering the home to arrest Luna.
