A witness in the trial of two Antelope Valley men accused of stabbing two teen-age runaways to death two years ago testified Thursday that the men came to his house the morning after the killings to change their clothes and get rid of the van they had allegedly stolen from the victims.

The prosecution claims that Joseph Tomas Orcasitas, 21, of Littlerock and Jose Angel Orona, 23, of Palmdale were part of a burglary ring and that they killed David Benjamin Scott, 14, of Llano to prevent him from testifying against them.

The pair also are charged with killing David’s companion, Daniel Kufeldt, 15, of Palmdale. The boys’ bodies were found June 22, 1992, in a remote desert area.

Deputy Dist. Atty. Ron L. Smalstig, the prosecutor, said Orcasitas and Orona lured the teen-agers “to a remote area and killed them and left the bodies to rot out in the desert.”

Orcasitas and Orona are each charged with two counts of murder with the special circumstances of multiple murder, conspiracy, lying in wait, murder during a robbery and murder of a witness. They could receive the death penalty if they are convicted.

Anthony Andres Valdez, 20, of Littlerock, testified Thursday in Los Angeles Superior Court that he heard the door to his house open about 2 a.m. and that when he knocked on his bathroom door, he “saw Joe and Casper wearing towels around their waists.”

Valdez told the court it was normal for Antelope Valley youths to stay at his house for drug parties while his mother was working. It was no different the morning after the killings, Valdez said, except that Orcasitas and Orona returned with the van David had stolen from his own family days earlier, and David did not return with them.

“They asked me to get rid of the van, and I said no,” Valdez said. “The only thing I can remember is telling them that I didn’t think what they were doing was right.”

Defense attorneys for both men contend that the prosecution lacks credible witnesses and that prosecution witnesses are exchanging their testimony for leniency.

Valdez was questioned by Deputy Public Defender Alan Budde, Orcasitas’ attorney, about his numerous suicide attempts and years of drug use.

After Valdez described a menu of drugs he was using on a regular basis at the time, including heroin, cocaine, speed and alcohol, Budde asked, “Was that a typical day of drugs you ingested?”

“Yes,” Valdez answered. “I’d say I was incoherent.”

On May 29, 1992, Orona attended a party at Valdez’s house where he told Durwood (Billy) Bland III, a key witness for the prosecution, that David had stolen his ring, according to a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department report.

According to court documents, a friend, Brian Peak, drove Orona, Orcasitas and Bland to a campground near Big Rock Creek in Angeles National Forest where the two youths were camped. Peak was freed from jail after pleading no contest to being an accessory to the boys’ killings.

Bland drove the boys to 96th Street East and Avenue V, and lured them out of the van, authorities said. Orona demanded the ring from David, according to a sheriff’s report, but David told them he didn’t have it. Orona then started stabbing David, the report says.
