FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : RAMS : Gandy Endures Rude Welcome to NFL

Tackle Wayne Gandy, the Rams’ No. 1 draft pick, spent much of Saturday watching Green Bay’s Sean Jones create chaos in the Ram backfield during the Packers’ 14-6 exhibition victory.

“I think Gandy is learning you have to get the mechanics of pass protection down,” Coach Chuck Knox said. “You can’t afford to be sloppy at this level, because these pass rushers are too big and too fast.”

That was apparent late in the second quarter when Jones left Gandy face down on the turf, then forced a fumble that resulted in a touchdown. The play was nullified by a penalty, but it was the lowest moment of Gandy’s frustrating day. Jones left him flat-footed on several plays.

The Rams came out of the game in fine shape. Knox said no one was injured seriously enough to miss practice today.

Miller, who did not play against the Packers because of a sore abdominal muscle, is expected to begin practicing again. Only Steve Israel (quadriceps) and Fred Stokes (knee) will miss practice, Knox said.
