LOS ANGELES : Council OKs Plan to Set Aside $2 Million for King

At least $2 million of the $3.8-million judgment in Rodney G. King’s civil rights lawsuit will be set aside for him under a disbursement plan approved Tuesday by the Los Angeles City Council.

At the request of King’s lawyer, the plan guarantees that the beating victim will receive a steady income from two $1-million funds to be managed by two annuity companies.

“This is a sound and prudent way to apportion that money,” Councilman Zev Yaroslavsky said. “It’s got everybody’s agreement.”

Steven Lerman, King’s lawyer, said he did not know yet if the payouts will be made over a set period or King’s lifetime.

The remaining $1.8 million will be split among King, lawyers that represented him over the years, investigators who aided them and hospitals and clinics that treated him, Lerman said.

U.S. District Judge John G. Davies still must determine how much the city will pay in attorneys’ fees for King.
