Holmes Wins, May Fight Once More--Possibly Against Foreman
Former world heavyweight champion Larry Holmes says he might have one more fight in him, possibly against George Foreman, and then he plans to hang up his gloves.
“We don’t have too much in this game left--I realize that,” Holmes said Tuesday night after winning a unanimous 10-round decision over Jesse Ferguson. “If I fight again, great. If I don’t, so be it. I don’t need boxing. I’ve already made my place in history.”
Holmes, 44, who held the title in 1978-85, improved to 61-4, and is 13-1 in the second comeback he began in 1991.
Ferguson, 37, best known for beating Ray Mercer in 1993 after Mercer supposedly asked him to take a dive, is 20-13. Many in the crowd of 2,574 booed when it was announced that all three judges favored Holmes, 97-94, 96-94, 99-92.
