Quake Preparation Workshops Offered

Earthquake-proofing workshops for homeowners and renters to prepare for the next big shaker will be offered this month at disaster assistance centers in Fillmore and Simi Valley.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services will teach the workshops at the Fillmore center, 552 Sespe Ave., and the Simi Valley center, 59 Tierra Rejada Road.

One set of workshops will show renters how to make their belongings and their apartments or houses more resistant to earthquakes. The renters’ workshops are scheduled for 10 a.m. Aug. 20 in Fillmore and 10 a.m. Aug. 27 in Simi Valley.

Another workshop will teach homeowners how to strengthen their buildings against temblors by reinforcing walls, bolting foundations and strapping down chimneys.

It will be offered at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 23 in Fillmore.

A third set of workshops will teach homeowners and renters ways to fasten heavy furniture, overhead fixtures and water heaters inside their homes.

One workshop will be offered in English at 10 a.m. Aug. 27 in Fillmore.

The same workshop is offered in Spanish at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in Fillmore and 6:30 p.m. Aug. 23 in Simi Valley.
