SIMI VALLEY : Council to Consider Bus Fare Increase
Bus riders in Simi Valley may be forced to pay higher fares if the City Council decides to hike rates to cover the increased cost of providing service.
The council will hold a public hearing Monday before deciding whether to increase regular fares from 75 cents to 90 cents and boost fares for the disabled from 75 cents to $1.
Although Simi Valley Transit is carrying more riders than ever before in its 22-year history, fare revenue has dropped as much as 5% on some routes, while costs have increased nearly 6%.
The cost to run Simi Valley’s buses at their current service level for another fiscal year is estimated at $1.6 million, $83,000 more than last year.
In addition to a fare increase, the council will consider allowing advertising on bus shelters and cutting back on early morning and late evening service.
The public hearing is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Monday at Simi Valley City Hall, 2929 Tapo Canyon Road.
