SUMMER BELLS: August may not seem like a school month, but a growing number of Orange County students have returned to the classroom. Enrollment in year-round schools has almost tripled since 1990. Ten school districts now have a total of 59 schools running year-round. . . . Says a Capistrano Unified district spokeswoman: “There’s widespread interest by parents to look at different calendar options.”

STREET FIGHTING: You can become really attached to your street name, like . . . 21st Street. Westminster residents who live there oppose a proposed name change to “Medical Way.” . . . Earl Keegan, who runs the Beverly Manor Nursing Center on nearby Hospital Circle--where Westminster Hospital used to be--is behind the move. “We need to let potential patients know this is still a medical area,” he says. But residents don’t want the hassle of notifying friends and business contacts about the address change. The city is asking Keegan for more details.

HAIL HARRIETT: Wrapping up her fourth and final term as Orange County supervisor--the only female member in the board’s 105-year history--Harriett M. Wieder will be feted next month for her 30 years in politics. . . . Although Wieder has represented Huntington Beach and northwest Orange County during her entire tenure on the board, the $150-per-plate send-off will take place at Le Meridien Hotel in Newport Beach.

GRAND STEPPING: Remember the local two-steppers who made it to the national country dance finals in Nashville? They won second place. . . . Tina Bright’s boyfriend and Ed Applegate’s girlfriend were waiting to congratulate them. . . . “Ed and I are just friends, but when we dance, we just seem to click,” says Bright, of Costa Mesa. “We were thrilled to do so well.” They won silver belt buckles worth nearly $1,000, and were asked to perform their show at the Country Rock Cafe in Lake Forest.
