Wife of Oxnard Mayor to Run for Harbor District

Irma Lopez, the wife of Oxnard Mayor Manuel Lopez, announced Wednesday that she will seek one of three open seats on the Oxnard Harbor District’s board of commissioners.

“It wasn’t an overnight decision,” Irma Lopez said of her desire to join the board that governs the deep-water Port of Hueneme. “I’ve been looking at that position for two years. I think I can bring another dimension to the commission.”

Lopez, an employee at the Oxnard Employment Development Department unemployment office, was seriously injured last year during the shooting rampage by unemployed engineer Alan Winterbourne.

Lopez has been on leave from work while she heals, but said her condition would not affect her longtime plans to run for the harbor district. In fact, the incident enhanced her desire to run for office, according to the written statement she issued.

“I’m well on my way to recovery,” she said.
