Mississippi Student Wins Western States Golf Event
Hugh Smith of Jackson State College in Mississippi took first place in the 14th annual Western States Golf Assn. Junior Championships on Aug. 12 at the Chester Washington course.
Smith had a two-day total of 142 to win the college men’s division.
Nakia Whitaker of Southern University won the college women’s division with a 167.
The two-day tournament was played on three courses: ages 13-18 played at Chester Washington; ages 11-12 played at Westchester and ages 7-10 at Jesse Owens par-three course.
In the boys’ 7 and 8 division, Austin Sawyer of Los Angeles won with an 18-hole total of 80 and Veronia Green of West Los Angeles shot 112 to win the girls’ division.
