A 19-year-old man was found early Sunday lying in a street with a gunshot to the head just minutes after he and other men fled from a shootout at a local bar, authorities said.

The dead man was identified as Candelario Quiroz Sosa of Pacoima. Quiroz Sosa had been one of the occupants of a van that had been driven away from the Maeba Bar in the 13500 block of Van Nuys Boulevard in Pacoima, said Police Sgt. Michelle Daniels.

Officers responded to a call at the bar about 12:15 a.m., and were later informed that a van that left the bar was found in San Fernando, Daniels said.

Less than 15 minutes after the incident, a San Fernando police officer found Quiroz Sosa’s body and the van on Truman Avenue near the intersection of Brand Boulevard when the officer responded to a resident’s report of an apparent hit-and-run accident, police said.

Los Angeles police arrived at the scene and took over the investigation, he said.

Sosa was taken by ambulance to a local hospital where he died, Daniels said.

On Sunday, police were trying to unravel the crime to determine whether Sosa and the men he was with were involved in the shooting at the bar.

“There was a shooting at the bar, yes, but we don’t know yet if they are suspects or witnesses,” said one detective working on the case.
