Undue Criticism
I am sick and tired of part-time residents from the Surfside neighborhood demeaning Port Hueneme city officials.
The latest example is Homer Willard’s letter in the Aug. 9 edition of your paper. In his letter, Mr. Willard alleged that Dick Velthoen, Port Hueneme’s city manager, was disrespectful when council member Dorill Wright announced he would not seek reelection.
I attended that very same City Council meeting. The only emotion that I witnessed on the part of Velthoen was his obvious sadness.
Willard and his fellow part-time residents and investors who own property in the Surfside area are opposed to the proposed recreational vehicle resort. Velthoen represents a handy scapegoat for their opposition to the project. They forget that the City Council approved the RV resort because it will raise $400,000 of much-needed new revenue for the city. The project will also provide an additional $3 million in sales to local businesses. It will also create new jobs.
