COLLEGE FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE NATION : Miami Quarterback Pleads No Contest

Miami Hurricane quarterback Frank Costa pleaded no contest to a drunken-driving charge and received the minimum mandatory sentence, including a six-month suspension of his driver’s license.

Costa’s fine and court costs totaled $583. He must perform 50 hours of community service, spend six months on probation and attend programs on drunken driving.

Coach Dennis Erickson declined to discuss any disciplinary action against Costa, who is expected to start the Sept. 3 season opener.

William Barnes, a top freshman running back prospect for Texas, did not meet all of the NCAA’s eligibility requirements and will enroll in a junior college. . . . Officials at Alabama Birmingham said they plan to move up to Division I-A football in 1996.
